General News: Cornwall Town Board Work Session December 2014

December 18, 2014

By Iris Kirkland

Cornwall NY - December 2, 2014 work session meeting hardly had sitting room. However, with 21 items on the agenda, most residents left after hearing about the Maplehurst project and Valerie Cordero defend her character and position as senior program coordinator.

A large group of people left disappointed after a brief discussion about the Maplehurst project. There wasn't much to say, because the lawyers did not show.

Gary Johnson, is a resident who lives near Maplehurst Inn. He said, “How long can this go on? I mean, most of the people here do not want this project to go forward, period." He wanted to see some action that night. Supervisor, Randy Clark explained to Johnson that no action was going to happen that night even with the lawyers present. The lawyers for the Maplehurst project was on the agenda only to provide updates about the project.

Clark reassured the residents that if the lawyers requested, they can attend a meeting to present their project proposal. After Clark thanked the residents of Cornwall for coming out, a large group walked out. The crowd did not leave quietly. There where random comments from disappointed residents. One woman said, “Oh wow.” While another repeated,“it's never a waste of time.” Another woman walked to the front of the room and asked if the lawyers notified the board that they would not make it? Clark said, “no.” He could not finish his sentence before the woman said, “so, they're even ruder than rude!”

Valerie Cordero, the senior program coordinator, addressed two issues about her position at the senior center.

Cordero asked that her job title be formally change and documented as “Senior Program Coordinator and Department Head,” to reflect the changes made in 2004 when Dick Randazzo was in office. Her second concern was about some unfavorable comments made about her character and her job in a town board meeting. “In the future, if there's any issues that may arise concerning my job duties, I would hope that I am afforded the opportunity to be made aware of them. Prior to them being address at a town board meeting. It is because of this, I am requesting that going forward any future mentions of my character be recorded in the minutes,” Cordero said.

She also advised the board that Clark received several letters from the senior citizens who have attended the senior center and who support her work. “I am a respected, valued, and appreciated by the work I do,” Cordero said.

Clark advised, that he and two other board members discuss the comments Cordero refers to. The plan is to move forward with new ideas that will enhance the senior programs without a budget increase. “I thought the meeting ended quite favorably,” Clark said. He then thanked Cordero for speaking to the board and told her to always feel free to call him or stop by. Cordero thanked Clark and left, a large group followed.
