General News: Notes from the Village Board Meeting

August 23, 2007

** The Cornwall-on-Hudson police department is losing a long-term employee.  Officer Charles Obremski , who has served with the department for 30 years, announced his retirement from the force, effective July 31, 2007.

** The water department plans to move out of its Maple Avenue facility and consolidate with the department of public works building on Shore Road.  The Maple Avenue building may be put on the market with residential development in mind, Mayor Gross said.

** Village attorney Howard Protter explained that the not-for-profit Local Development Corporation appears to be out of compliance with new state regulations and may no longer be able to sponsor the annual Riverfest.  The future of the LDC, which was formed in 1998,  is expected to be a future subject of the village board.

** Village business owners Ray Yannone and Tony Missere encouraged the board to keep looking for a solution to the parking issue near their businesses in the village square.  Tony Missere, in a July letter to Mayor Joe Gross read at the meeting, accused the mayor of being opposed to the patio he built outside The Riverbank Restaurant and of soliciting letters criticizing the patio.

** The Orange County Planning Department has received its copy of the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson proposed master plan.  Village attorney Howard Protter told the board it could expect a response from the county office in 30-to-60 days and then the village can hold a public hearing on the document.

New Business

** Village residents Daniel and Elena DeGroat are proposing a food and beverage vending cart at Donahue Memorial Park.  In a letter to Mayor Joe Gross, the DeGroats proposed a vending cart to sell hot dogs, snacks and drinks to people at the riverfront.  “We invite our neighbors to utilize the beauty of the village,” and adds that villagers could enjoy the park without having to leave for food or drink.  The village board did not discuss the proposal.

** John Wenz, the head of the Riverfront Revitalization Committee, reported to the board that Vassar College has 160-feet of 12-foot wide floating dock that it is offering for sale to the village.  Wenz noted that the dock is “suitable for use on our watefront” and the village must now determine if it wants the dock.

** Storm King Fire Engine Company No. 2 is requesting permission to consume beer at the firehouse around the time of the Orange County Fireman’s Parade in New Windsor on September 27, and again from September 28, 29 and 30, during the annual Bruce Armitage Softball Tournament.

Comments:

Once again the bickering of two of our restuarant businessmen over the perceived lack of parking by their eating establishments has surfaced at the village board meeting. The result? Threats to the residents of the village, especially those on River Avenue, to have their right to enjoy their homes, use of their property, compromised.
Over this past summer there has been griping by Yannone that there is a parking shortage. Yet I have yet to see one day or night when additional parking is needed. Most days there are a handful of cars in the lot. And I should know. I live by it, see it daily, listen to the kids in it, pick up the trash from it.

During the fair, when most of the parking places would be expected to be taken, there was parking available.

Just admit that Tony got one up on you by managing to build his outdoor patio, while your restuarant has stacking chairs and plastic tables. Your jealousy, anger, outrage or whatever you want ot call it gives you no right to disrupt me or my neighbors right to the peaceful enjoyment of our homes. Collectively, we pay more in taxes than you do. We have rights to live in the village as a neighborhood community. You have the privilege to serve us if we deem it suitable to our needs.

And your outrage over my red car in the lot? Grow up. I got the police call on my car, and I'll move it so you have an additional space. Not that the other 40 spots available to you will appease you.
