General News: Flu Shot Available at County Clinics

Flu Clinic
December 20, 2014

Goshen, NY – Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus and Commissioner of Health Dr. Eli Avila today reminded residents that it’s not too late to take the simple and easy step of getting a flu vaccination to help fight off flu this season. An average of 5 to 20 percent of the US population gets the flu and over 200,000 people are hospitalized from seasonal flu-related complications each year. Orange County’s flu shot clinics are open to anyone 19 years of age and older and there is a fee. Medicare Part B normally fully covers one flu shot per flu season in the fall or winter.

“As the weather turns cold and damp and people start gathering for the holidays, it’s the perfect combination to promote the spread of flu,” said Dr. Avila. “But it’s not too late to take precautions and get a flu shot. The vaccine is readily available from a variety of sources, including the Orange County Health Department.”
“I got my seasonal flu shot, and I urge residents to protect themselves and their family by getting one as well,” said Neuhaus. “Schedule an appointment at one of our Health Department’s local flu shot clinics today.”
The shot, administered in the arm, is a so-called “killed” vaccine and cannot give you the flu. It does, however, take approximately two weeks to work fully and some do get sick during this time.
The Orange County Department of Health is scheduling flu shot clinics by appointment at its offices in Goshen, Newburgh, and Middletown. Get your shot today and help yourself and our community stay healthy this winter. To schedule an appointment, contact the Orange County Health Department at 291-4300 or visit the Seasonal Flu Information section of the county website to learn more.
