Willie Wonka Jr., the story of a candy factory owner who is searching for an heir to take over his business, brings its foot-tapping musical magic to the stage of Cornwall Central Middle School this Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m.

The musical is adapted from the 1971 film based on the Roald Dahl book “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley wrote the original score that includes such favorites as “The Candy Man” and “Pure Imagination.”

In this production under the direction of music teacher Valerie Ransbottom, dozens of children are choreographed in delightful scenes that take place from the factory floor to a television studio in German where a crew of chefs dances while carrying plates of food.

At the heart of the story is the Bucket family, who live in the shadow of the Willie Wonka chocolate factory.  They can smell its richness yet they live on a meager income the father earns at the toothpaste factory.

Despite their poverty, the family believes in positive thinking.  When Mr. Bucket loses his job, his son Charlie urges him to think positively.  The family’s stomachs are empty but they cling to the hope that they can win one of the five golden tickets that would give them a chance to meet Mr. Wonka and get a lifetime supply of chocolate.

Sarah Henry is stately in the role of Willy Wonka, who serves as a narrator of sorts.  Michael Doulin shows he can belt out a song in the role of Charlie Bucket.  Gavin O’Gorman attracts a crowd wherever he goes as the Candy Man.

Dozens of supporting actors and actress light up their stage with their singing and dancing.

Don’t miss this heart-warming tale of perseverance, patience, and family love.
