General News: Village Fire Dept. Upset About Fire Siren

August 03, 2007

The village fire department’s siren is a topic of hot interest to members of Storm King Fire Engine Co. #2 who say that they are not happy about a recommendation in the recently finalized draft of the village master plan that addresses the fire siren issue.

The master plan acknowledges a role for a siren, but proposes that if its volume level cannot be lowered to 80 decibels that the addition of two towers running at lower volume be studied. The plan notes that current decibel levels are as high as 99.

SKFE #2 chief Jeff Armitage disagrees with the idea of adding towers and he is annoyed that the fire siren recommendation exists at all. He and other members believe that the entire issue of the fire siren had been resolved back at the public hearing in April.

“We thought that this was taken off the table,” Armitage says, adding that the department then looked “at the options of lowering the decibels or replacing the siren.”

Armitage says that the department not only looked into a new siren, it was about to spend $7,000 to purchase and install a new one that could achieve lower decibel levels when the department learned of the master plan’s recommendation. He put the purchase on hold.

Lee Murphy, the chair of the master plan committee, says that perhaps the controversy would never have occurred if the fire department had notified the village government of its intention to purchase a new siren. “Consultation would have been a very good thing,” he says.

Murphy also disagrees with the notion that the fire siren was taken off the table and says that the final draft addresses concerns raised by SKFE #2 members at the hearing. “It wasn’t put back in,” Murphy says, referring to the recommendation, “it was re-worded but it never went away.”

Lee Murphy, a professional sound recordist, is adamant that the public should be protected from noise pollution. “I have a strong feeling about protecting the hearing of people living closer to the fire station,” he says. “It is a real potential health hazard that could not be ignored.”

Armitage says the fire department’s intention was to respond to this concern. “People are upset that they were going to use money (for the new siren) that could have been used for other things in order to work with the master plan,” he says. That money, part of a grant from Senator Larkin’s office, will be put aside, he says.

Comments:

Hear hear!! <pun intended>

I can't see why there is any need for this anachronism (siren) any longer. And speaking of "noise pollution" - how about the dozens of Harley riding Easy Rider wanna bees that storm up and down 218 every weekend when the waether is nice. Is there ANY way to pass an ordinance or enforce it? I mean - sure they have a right to ride through town - and all apologies to OC Choppers - but is it really necessary for the things to be THAT friggin loud?

Buy a home next to a convience store, complain about the traffic/dumpsters. Purchase a home near the railroad tracks, complain about trains. Live near a Fire House, wail about sirens. If you don't like it where you live, move!! Good riddance!!

As a member of the fire dept and community it makes me sick to think that people that run this master plan commitee have hardly even lived in Cornwall. Most are new commers that have moved here in the last 5 to 8 years or so. And as soon as they get here, they start complaining about everything. Cornwall-on-hudson has been fine without you, and we dont need your help. If you dont like it here or think the siren is too loud, then leave. Another poster brought up a point about Covac and how they dont have sirens. This is because they have bunks and have members that sleep over. Somebody is always at thier station to be manned. At the firehouse we do not have these benifits. People have jobs and are not around the firehouse. Pagers are handy, but sometimes they are left behind when we walk out the door in a hurry. And i know for a fact, when i mow my lawn i cannot here the pager go off. Whats next? No sirens on the firetruck cause they have lights on them? People who complain this much should get a 2nd job to keep their minds busy!
