The Cornwall Central High School Drama Club has proven that it knows how to put on a slapstick comedy with its production of “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” that debuts Friday night, November 14.

The production features two different casts of talented student actors who take on their roles with enthusiasm and great stage presence.

The play revolves around a team of that includes a Broadway producer, director, actor, singer, and dancer who gather at a Westchester estate to audition for a new play. The team is really being scrutinized by an undercover detective who is trying to solve a series of murders that occurred during the team’s earlier production.

The cast at a dress rehearsal on Wednesday included Danny Distasio as a young comedian and his wildly expressive mannerisms and facial expressions electrified the far corners of the auditorium.

Emily Zwart played the role of Elsa Grossenknueten, whose estate is the scene of the gathering and who thrills to the idea of catching a murder in their midst. She is inspired by her uncle, whose grim portraits hangs in the room. He was a spy and installed a hidden passageway in the house that adds to the air of mystery when things start to go awry.

As the undercover detective watches and a sudden blizzard means that no one is going home, dead bodies begin to fall again. The first to drop is Helga, the German maid, who re-appears the next day oddly changed.

Theatre-goers will have to catch one of the performances to find out how the mystery ends. The curtain rises on Friday at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday at 7 p.m. The production closes after a matinee performance on Sunday at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are available at the door at $7 or $5 for students and seniors.
