General News: Cornwall United Soccer Week 9

November 11, 2008

U9 GIRLS
The U9 Lady Tigers traveled to Wappingers and came away with a 3-0 victory over the Tribe.  The girls were able to control the ball in the mid field thanks to the hustle of Aleigh Seitz and Sam Argenio.  Taylor Mellon had many shots on goal including one that deflected off a Wappingers player and went into the goal.  Erin Dempsey and Tess McVann were relentless on offense creating multiple runs at the goal.  Erin Dempsey scored two goals, the second on a great pass from Madeline Dwyer.

U12 GIRLS
The Predators lost 2-1 to Washingtonville Nighthawks in a muddy, wet, fight for top honors in the division. The Predators played an awesome game as a team, controlling the ball in the offensive third for 70% of the game, taking 16 shots. Erin Geraghty, Jacqueline Hogan, and Victoria Colotti had sharp games offensively. Colotti scored the lone goal for the Predators on a well-placed direct kick. Despite the two goals given up by Cornwall, the defense played well, with particularly strong performances by Christa Sidoti, Johanna Caufaglione, and Erin Leahy. Emily Gallo and Sam Sabini combined for 7 saves at keeper.

U13 GIRLS-CYCLONES
The Cyclones faced the Beekman Twisters at home this weekend.  Despite dominating the first half offensively, the Cyclones let up goals on two fast breaks and trailed 2-0 at halftime.  But Cornwall came back!  Co-Captain Alex Steinman rocketed a shot past the Twister keeper in the fifth minute of the second half.  She followed with a second goal seven minutes later off a beautiful cross, tying the game. Defensively, Cornwall silenced Beekman.  Jessica McGowan and Rose Foody had control of the sidelines, showing remarkable ball-handling skills.  Olivia Tellefsen, the anchor of the Cornwall defense, cleared ball after ball, shutting down the center of Beekman's offense. Cornwall lost this heart breaker of a game on a penalty kick with less than three minutes remaining.

U13 BOYS
The Storm defeated the Mahopac Arrows by a score of 1-0. Great defensive game today against a strong Mahopac opponent.  Kevin Stevens was vital in goal with solid backup from Ryan Mellino and Matt DeSouza.  Damon Neil scored the winning goal on a setup by Chase Huestis.  Ian Barnes hustled the midfield.
