General News: Randazzo Facing Future After Defeat

November 06, 2008

Former town of Cornwall supervisor Richard Randazzo says he is not sure what he will do after his defeat at the polls on Tuesday in the race for the New York State 96th District Assembly seat.

Randazzo, a Democrat, served as supervisor for 20 years until he left that office is 2007 to mount his challenge to current Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun, who has held the seat since 1990. It was Randazzo’s fourth attempt to take the seat away from Republican Calhoun and when he launched his campaign he said he thought that he had a pretty good chance at winning this year.

When the votes were counted on Tuesday night, however, a majority, 53.8 percent, went to incumbent Nancy Calhoun. In an interview the next day, Randazzo noted that the percentage was very similar to that in 2006, when he also ran for the assembly seat. The unofficial vote tally was 28,652 for Calhoun and 24,620 for Randazzo. Two thousand five hundred absentee ballots have yet to be counted but Randazzo said he doesn’t think they will tip the balance in his favor.

When asked about his next step, Randazzo said he didn’t have any specific plans but was still concerned about the problems facing local residents. “I haven’t thought about my future,” Randazzo said. “ I enjoyed the campaign and the issues are still burning one that are very important to everyone.”

As for Assemblywoman Calhoun, she’ll be rolling up her sleeves and returning to Albany on November 18, when Governor Patterson has called a special legislative session to deal with the looming $1.2 billion budget shortfall.

Comments:

I hope all the knuckleheads in Albany can get behind Gov. Patterson and meet this budget shortfall headon like adults. The pain will have to be spread around and I hope it not business like usual. How about no pork barrel for anyone for a change.
