General News: Orange Co. Planning Official Visits Village

Orange County Planning Commissioner David Church did a walking tour of the village Monday morning in the rain with Mayor Joe Gross, who wanted to get Church’s input on the village’s development.
Mayor Gross said that he intends for the village to apply for a county planning grant in September that would be used for a study of the village square. Gross said that if the town of Cornwall also applies for a grant to look at sprucing up Main Street the two municipalities could get more money, as much as $15,000 a piece.
Gross says that any study of the village square should look at traffic flow, landscaping, lighting and any other relevant issues. He also said that Church suggested that the village hire a landscape designer as a consultant and do a study of the public transportation needs of village residents.
“I took him down to Pagenstecher Park,” Gross said. “He seemed to enjoy the natural beauty of the village and said that is something we should capitalize on.”
Gross shared with Church his desire to maintain the stone arch bridge under Route 218 near Pagenstecher Park, which is in need of repair. Gross also noted that the wooden sign erected by the former Museum of the Hudson Highlands in the patch of green triangle at the village entrance is coming down and will be replaced with a new metal sign on the bridge.
