Cornwall tags out an Islip player |
July 24, 2007
By Christine Staudle
The Major girls softball team took on Islip Americans tonight in Brewster and won 3-2. Caroline Staudle's hit in the bottom of the first scored Olivia Jebb for Cornwall. Cassie Browne had the other RBI in the inning to give Cornwall a 2-0 lead.
Islip answered with a run in the top of the second inning. Islip's scoring was cut back when Browne, Cornwall's left fielder, cut down a runner at home in the second inning on a one-hop throw to Megan Staudle who caught the throw and placed the tag while blocking the plate.
Lora Rinaldi got on base in the bottom of the second inning and was driven home by Emily Casey to lead Cornwall, 2-1.
In the top of the third Megan Staudle pounced out from behind the plate to throw out a batter attempting to bunt. Megan Staudle also picked-off a runner trying to delay steal. She threw to Lora Rinaldi at first for the tag out.
In the top of the sixth inning Cassie Browne thwarted what could have been a big inning for Islip. She again made a big play from left when she threw a runner out at third base for a force play on what would have been a bloop single to left.
Steady nerves on defense and solid pitching by Allison Scott held Islip at bay until the sixth inning when they scored only one run. Allison Scott is now 8-0 in the All Star season.
The girls take on Staten Island Wednesday, 7/25 @ 5:30pm. They must win two games for the state crown.
