General News: New Head Football Coach for Cornwall

Cornwall will soon have a new head football coach if the school board approves the district’s hiring of Marcus Hughes, a 28-year-old former college player and high school coach from Colorado.

Cornwall schools athletic director Lou Cioffi announced the planned appointment on Monday, praising Hughes’s abilities.  “His knowledge, energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism will make him a great fit for our outstanding students and athletes, whether on the football field or in Physical Education class,” Cioffi said in a release.

Hughes attended Mesa State on a football scholarship in 1998, where he played as a defensive back, wide receiver, and kick returner. In high school, he also ran track, where he was a two-time state meet participant in the 4.4 40 yard dash. After an injury, Marcus transferred to the University of Northern Colorado where he graduated as a Dean’s List Physical Education Major.

For the past eight years, Hughes has been an assistant coach and offensive coordinator in Colorado, most recently at Northglenn High School, where the team qualified and advanced in the Colorado State Tournament.

Hughes says that he is real excited about coming to Cornwall as the head coach and that he looks forward to competing for a Section 9 title and getting into the state playoffs.  Hughes visited Cornwall last week and met with the school officials and some team members.

“It’s a good situation to come into,” Hughes says about the Cornwall football program. “It has had winning people over the past few years, great support and great athletes.”

Hughes grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado, where his mother was the vice president of student affairs at Colorado State University.  He has never lived on the east coast but has visited his sister who is a producer/reporter for ABC News.  He says that the Hudson Valley is a beautiful area and that the people he met during his visit were really nice.

Hughes will be moving his wife and two young daughters, ages two and six, to Cornwall by August 1, less than two weeks before the first day of practice.
Cornwall’s former head football coach, Matt Buddhagen, resigned in June after a two-year stint in the position.  In 2006 the varsity team went to the state championship with an 11-2 record, then lost to Corning East in the state title game.
