Former Cornwall police chief Russell (Rusty) O’Dell has been hired by the Middlebury, Vt., police department.  That’s the word from Middlebury police chief Thomas Hanley who says that O’Dell started with his force on September 22.

O’Dell resigned as Cornwall police chief in December 2006, ending a career in local law enforcement that went back to 1983.   A native of Cornwall-on-Hudson, O’Dell nearly took a position with the Bellows Falls, Vt., police department a year ago, but turned it down at the last minute.

Chief Hanley said that once officer O’Dell completes his Vermont-specific training, he will be assigned to East Middlebury, where he will serve as a neighborhood liaison.  A recent convenience store robbery in that area sparked residents concerns about their safety, Hanley said.  Middlebury is home to Middlebury College and has many of the charms of a historic New England college town.

Hanley said that his department conducted a thorough background investigation of O’Dell and an officer from Vermont spent a couple of days in Cornwall talking to people who knew the former police chief.

“He impressed us as being personable and people-friendly,” Hanley said, adding that O’Dell’s experience on the Cornwall police force will benefit his new assignment.
