General News: Teen Concert on Friday Night

On Friday evening, July 13, the grounds of Cornwall town hall will be transformed into a rock concert venue for four bands that will take the stage in the first of several events geared for local teenagers and sponsored by the town recreation department.

Willow Playground, a group of three who took their name from their old hangout, the play area of Willow Avenue elementary school. will be one of the bands to rock the crowd. The Cornwall band is composed of three Cornwall high school sophomores, Lindsday Roblesi on guitar and back-up vocals, Brien Schweizer, on drums and vocals, and bassist Dan Parrett.

Lindsay says that she and Schweizer had always joked about forming a band then finally, seven months ago, took the step. Since then, they have played at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, at 2 Alices Coffee Lounge, and a two other local pwerformances. Roblesi says that the band plans to record a CD in a few weeks and they have a date to play at Club Crannell in Poughkeepsie on September 21. You can learn more about Willow Playground here.

The band A Fragile Tomorrow has been playing together for several years and their ties to one another couldn’t run much deeper. Three of the four band members are brothers Sean, Dominic and Brendan Kelly from Montgomery. The fourth player is Sean Rhodes, the bass player, who joined the band last October.

Sean says that he started singing when he was three or four years old, then started “getting serious” on the piano around the age of six or seven. “In our house, that’s how we dealt with things, with music” Sean says.

The 15-year-old explains that he is one of three triplets who were each affected by cerebral palsy. His brother Dominic plays drums and sings in the band but the memory of the third brother Paul, who died ten years ago, inspires both of them, especially when they are songwriting.

At 12, brother Brendan is the youngest member of the band but Sean says he excels on the guitar. “Brendan is definitely a much, much better guitar player than I am,” Sean says. “He never, ever puts it down.”

A Fragile Tomorrow has brought its folk/rock music to The Chance in Poughkeepsie and the Renegades stadium. This fall they are scheduled to appear on a national television show, “Fearless Music.” They have already been featured locally on the cable show “Poughkeepsie Live.” Read more about them and listen to songs from their CD here.

Another band in the line-up is The Collective, made up of recent high school graduates from Cornwall. Lead guitar player Mike Kussman says that the band has been together for about five months playing alternative metal music. Earlier he was in a punk band with a couple of the band members, Chris Kehoe and Joe Rotolo. Now they’ve added lead singer Mike DiPerro.

“We put a lot into our music,” Mike says. “I write most of it but we all write our parts and then we get together and work it all out.”

Mike says that Friday’s concert will be the first time the band has had a public gig and he hopes that people are open-minded when they listen and hear what the band has to say.

The band concert is part of a series of programs that town council member Mary Beth Greene Krafft has created with the recreation department using a $4,700 grant from the Orange County Youth bureau. The other events include a DJ night and film night at the town hall. Visit the Town of Cornwall recreation department website for details.

This is great!!! I was looking for something fun to do this weekend and these 'yutes' have filled the bill.
I hope that there is a good turnout to support this type of activity.
Cornwall has expansive sports and theater programs but that leaves a lot of kids, young people, out of the picture. There is a tremendous amount of talent, imagination, and energy in our children. Let's find more ways to encourage the creativity and personal growth that comes from exploring it.
