General News: Cornwall United Soccer Week 2

September 18, 2008

U9 GIRLS
The Lady Tigers came out kicking enroute to a 5-0 win at Rhinebeck.  Carly Sigelbaum was a standout for the Tigers on offense, scoring three times.  Ava Sabini and Erin Dempsey also scored to fuel the offense.  Tess Mc Vann and Nicole Shapiro combined for the shut out in goal.  Madeline Dwyer and Sam Argenio displayed great all around hustle

U11 GIRLS
The Cheetahs won their opening round state cup game 2 -1 over Chappaqua. The game was scoreless in the first half as Kaitlyn Preiss, Katarina VanLedtje, Emma Sabini and Jessica Dwyer denied the Mustangs any shots on goal. Micah Wojehowski was outstanding as the hometown team’s goalkeeper.

Jillian Decker scored the Cheetahs’ first goal during a scrum inside the opponent’s goalie box. Giovanna Fichera then fed a perfect forward pass to Samantha Nelbach who blistered the ball into the net for the Cheetahs second score. Lauren Pinkham, Lilian Poling, Lexi West and Maddie Lander were the playmakers up front.

U13 GIRLS-DRAGONFIRE
The U13 Dragonfire and Highland played to a 3-3 tie. Highland scored first in the first half. In the second half, Kelly Gleason scored the tying goal on an assist from Kamryn Brown. Alex Jurgens played well at sweeper. Both teams endured extreme heat conditions.

U13 GIRLS-CYCLONES
The Cyclones fell to the Beekman Twisters 1-0.  The first half was scoreless as the Twisters were unable to penetrate the Cyclone defense thanks to ferocious play by Jessica McGowan, Jackie Masterson and keeper Siobhan Lyons.  Offensively, Meaghan Shapiro and Krissy McGonnigle created several scoring opportunities that the Cyclones were not able to capitalize on.

In the second half, Beekman managed to edge a deflected shot past the keeper, scoring what turned out to be the winning goal. The Cyclones has multiple shots on goal but were not able to punch one through. Both teams played with amazing intensity despite the brutal heat.

U10 BOYS
The Cornwall Strikers succumbed to the Brewster Braves 6-1. The first half was spent exhaustively by the team defending the goal for Craig DeSouza who had many precarious and wildly close saves at the goal. The oppressive heat and lack of subs exhausted the Strikers but Conor St Germain played a phenomenal defense alongside J.R. Rinaldi and Max Cameron in the second half. Nick Coppola scored the only goal for the Strikers in this difficult and well-played game.

U13 BOYS
The Storm suffered a tough 3-0 loss to a very physical Wappingers team.  Despite the heat, Ryan Mellino and Michael Vecchio put forth a strong defensive effort while Matt DeSouza and Chase Huestis hustled all game. Kevin Stevens turned in a strong performance in goal.

Men’s Team
The Cornwall Men’s Over 30 Team was victorious in their season opener as they beat Somers 2-1.  The team displayed poise, focus and ball control that led to both goals scored by Marcos Cordero.  Denis O’Keefe and Mario Herrera assisted his goals.  Newcomers Ed Burke and Peter Harris had an immediate impact on defense and midfield respectively.  Tommy Keefer was tested early on several shots and proved to be the “man for the job”.
