General News: Girls Make Crafts for Charity

As you stroll through this year’s craft sale at the Independence Day celebration on Wednesday at Town Hall, there’s one table in particular that you might like to bring your kids to. It will be manned by some of the village’s now-5th-graders. And while their crafts are admittedly child-like, the prices are quite reasonable. For example, bookmarks are 25 cents and bracelets are between one and two dollars. Plus, all the proceeds will be donated to charity.
Last winter, the children in Mrs. O’Dell’s social studies class at Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School learned how to make God’s eyes. The girls especially enjoyed this activity and had the idea that they wanted to sell their crafts.
A few months later, in Mrs. Prusinski’s computer class, the children were learning about AIDS and about how children in Africa were often the victims of this horrible disease. It then dawned on the girls that they could combine their love of craft-making with their desire to make a difference in the world. They became determined to have a craft sale and donate the proceeds to charities that could help afflicted or disadvantaged children.
At the point of this realization, a number of different things started to occur. Sophia Paffenroth went shopping for supplies with her mother and spent hours of her free time making ribbon bracelets and small purses at home. Sophie Rice went into the city with her father to shop for interesting buttons in order to make bracelets that she had seen in her American Girl magazine.
In early April, the girls arranged a craft-making play date where they made bookmarks and pompom creatures with supplies that Emma Sweeney and Catherine Schwarzler had brought over. Other girls who participated in craft-making are Erin Hines, Dara Cuffe, and Elise Bukowski.
All of this flurry of activity, however, may never have gone further if not for the effort of Marlis Paffenroth, Sophia’s mother. She recently secured a table at this year’s 4th of July craft sale in town. There, some of the girls will take turns sitting at a table trying to sell their goods for charity. It’s the hope of these girls that people will stop by their table and purchase their hand-made items to aid in the effort to help children who need it.

Thank you everyone who stopped by the girls' table today at the craft fair. The girls collected over $200 and will be splitting the money between two charities - Children's Cancer Fund and Oprah's School in South Africa. More importantly, the girls learned how good it feels to work hard for a good cause. The support from the community was tremendous.
