General News: Charges Reduced in Daniella Jones Case

September 08, 2008

Former Cornwall high school science teacher Daniella Jones pleaded guilty last week to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct in Newburgh City Court, according to court clerk Sharon Reed.

Jones, who was fired last January by the Cornwall school district in a controversial case involving physical contact with a student, agreed to pay $5,000, the same amount she was accused of stealing by falsely claiming unemployment insurance when she was, in fact, employed by the Cornwall school district. Jones originally faced felony charges for grand larceny and for filing a false instrument in the first degree. Both charges were reduced to misdemeanors, then further reduced to one charge of disorderly conduct, a violation.

Jones grabbed headlines last January when the school district fired her after she allegedly struck a student who was insubordinate in her classroom. The student later sued Jones for harassment and after a court hearing in which students provided eyewitness accounts of the incident, town of Cornwall Judge Francis Navarra found her not guilty.

Jones had no comment on the plea deal.
