Donahue Memorial Park is being transformed this week. The trucks started arriving early Tuesday morning, bringing in the tents and flooring to create the future site of the annual St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital Foundation gala, this year called “An Evening in Monte Carlo.”

Sue Sullivan, executive director of the foundation and a vice president of the hospital, is overseeing every detail of the gala, which is honoring state senator Bill Larkin, of Cornwall-on-Hudson. Sullivan says they wanted to honor Sen. Larkin because of all the money he has helped raise for the hospital. According to the hospital’s press office, he has secured millions of dollars in state funding for vital initiatives like the emergency department renovations, construction of a helipad to expedite patient transport, renovations of the pediatric unit and most recently, funds for the construction of a comprehensive cancer treatment center at the Cornwall campus.

“Senator Larkin has been helping us navigate through the system,” Sullivan said in an interview. “He is amazing. He just picks up the phone and gets things done.”

As Sullivan picked her way around the crews putting up the two large tents she bubbled with enthusiasm about the upcoming fundraiser where some 500 people are expected. Sullivan said last year’s gala netted the hospital gala about $200,000.

When guests arrive this year, they will each be given $200 of play money that they can spend at the gaming tables. Winners will be able to cash in their chips for raffle tickets that will be drawn for six of what Sullivan calls spectacular gifts. A silent auction and a real auction are part of the event as well.

A friend of the hospital from Costume Armour promises to deliver some surprises for all the guests. Dinner and a special tribute to Senator Larkin will follow.

Sullivan’s one concern four days before the gala is the weather. With tropical storm Hanna threatening to bring heavy rains to the region during the weekend, Sullivan declares they are ready for any eventuality and won’t be stopped by a little rain or wind.

Village clerk Jeanne Mahoney said that Donahue Park and the boat ramp will remain open to the public while the gala site is being constructed. It will be closed to the public on Saturday. The village approved the use of the park earlier this year and the hospital is paying a $2,300 fee for the privilege.

Tickets for the gala are still available by calling the hospital foundation at 568-2580.

Comments:

That $2,300 can be used towards the $125 thousand dollars the Village spent on the Bandstand at Donahue Park. Yes, quite the investment for the Village taxpayers. YIKES!

Don't think that waste of money would have happened if Mayor Gross had been in office back then...

I have asked this question before and got no reply so I'll try again- is there any reason why the gala can't be held in October as long as it is going to be at the Cornwall Landing so often? The gala was originally only going to be here "every few years" and now it is becoming every year. Why can't it be after boating season so the boat owners aren't deprived of another day? Is it due to the hospital fiscal year ending or something like that? I would appreciate someone explaining this is they can. Thank you.
