The Cardinals defeated the Orioles 3 to 1 on Saturday morning to take the championship game in the Cornwall Little League Major division. The Cardinals ended the season with a record of 18 wins and zero losses.
The most dramatic moment of the championship match took place before the game began when Cardinals’ manager Bobby Crowley took a line drive to his right eye during pitching practice. An ambulance took Crowley to the hospital where his eye was stitched up while his team played on.
The Orioles played an aggressive game, with the first run of the game scoring on a hit batted in by Joe Englese in the third inning. With the Orioles ahead 1 to 0, they kept the Cardinals scoreless until the fifth inning.
The Cardinals rallied in the fifth inning, with Chase Hustice scoring on a double by Ryan Crowley. Michael Hines and Ryan Crowley followed with a run apiece and the Cardinals took the lead, 3 to 1. Within minutes, the Cardinals had wrapped up their championship, the second in two years.
One of the highlights of the Cardinals’ season was the performance of Mike Trainor, who hit 14 home runs, two shy of the league record of 16.
The 2007 Cardinals members are Thomas Boucher, Dylan Carberry, Gregory Cleeves, Ryan Crowley, Kyle Eng, Michael Feenaghty, Liam Heaney, Michael Hines, Chase Hustis, Ryan Moran, Dan Musico, Drew Thorpe, and Mike Trainor.
