General News: Vandermark Named Grand Marshal
|
Anna Vandermark |
June 20, 2007
A remarkable Cornwall woman, Anna Vandermark, has been named grand marshal of the 2007 4th of July Parade.
The Cornwall Independence Day Committee says that Vandermark’s life story embodies courage, hope and perseverance. A Cornwall native born in 1927, Vandermark lost her husband, Raymond, in 1955. To help raise her two daughters, Barbara (O’Rourke) and Linda (Sukeena) she found a job as secretary to principal Thomas Shost at Cornwall High School. Vandermark had graduated from the high school in 1944.
While working, Vandermark earned an associate’s degree in business from Orange County Community College in 1965 and a bachelor’s degree in business education in 1972.
With her degrees, Vandermark started working as a guidance counselor at the high school and continued to pursue more degrees. She received a master’s in guidance administration in 1975 and became director of guidance in 1978.
Throughout her career, Vandermark charted the future of many students, many of whom stay in touch with her today.
Anna Vandermark has also been active in civic organizations, serving as secretary for the Beaver Dam Lake Water Corp and as a member of the Cornwall Independence Day Committee. She was chosen as a distinguished Cornwall high school alumna in 1990.
In recent years Vandermark has battled Parkinson’s disease. She still lives in the house her husband built at Beaver Dam Lake.
When she leads the parade on July 4, among the many fans cheering her along the way will be her six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. For further information about the Cornwall Independence Day Celebration, visit www.cornwall4th.org
Comments:
Brava! Ms. Vandermark is an excellent choice for the Grande Marshall(ette?) She has a wonderfully generous and caring spirit and is well loved and admired by everyone who knows her or had the opportunity to work with her. One more great reason to celebrate the fourth of July here in Cornwall!
