Cornwall baseball fans are in for a treat this week, when the 11-year-old boys team and the 9-10-year-old boys team play sectional games in the Cornwall Little League park.

On Thursday, the 9-10 year-olds will face the winner of the Rockland county district at 5:30 p.m.   The sectional face-off follows the team’s come-from-behind win against Montgomery in the District 19 title game on Saturday. (Read all about that game here.)

The 11-year-olds won the District 19 championship on July 19 when they defeated Montgomery 17-7 and will face a team from the Kingston area on Saturday at 5:30.

Head coach/manager Guy Chatfield notes that the 11-year-olds deserve a special recognition for winning the district 19 championship for two years.  He says that he believes it is the first time in Cornwall boys history that a team has won back-to-back district 19 championships.

Chatfield says that a contribution was made to the team by every one of the following players:  Mike Bartolone, Greg Cleeves, Nick Klumack, Cameron Kreider, Chris Love, Joe McConville, Mike Reilly, Mike Scott, Matt Smith, Dan Storer Matt Wheeler, and Mike White.  He also acknowledges the work of coaches: Tim Kreider and Skip Storer

Guy Chatfield is following in his father’s footsteps and is part of the only father-son duo to coach winning championship teams at Cornwall Little League.   Pete Chatfield won the first district championship ever at Cornwall as a coach back in 1972.  Thirty-five years later, his son, Guy won two championships back-to-back (2007, 2008).

Guy’s success comes after 38 years of involvement with the league, which he first joined at age 8 as a player, then moved on to become a scorekeeper, umpire, and coach.
