General News: Minor Girls Go for District Title

July 15, 2008

By Andy Reed
In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Cornwall Minor Girls Softball Ttam took on Montgomery at the Warwick fields.  The girls came up first and put two runs on the board, helped by a home run by Patty Darcy.  Samantha Railey spent the next three innings on the mound, shutting down the Montgomery offense.  An offense that had been so good that it had yet to play a full six-inning game.

In the top of the fourth, the ladies put two more runs on the board to take a 4 – 0 lead.  In the bottom of the fourth, Montgomery scraped together one run.  After a scoreless fifth inning, the Dragons put another two runs on the board.  Taking a 6 – 1 lead into the bottom of the sixth, Caitlyn Hall, who had pitched the last three innings, shutdown the potent offense for a 6 – 2 win.

In addition to the home run and two great pitching performances, Kaitlyn Preiss was fantastic at shortstop, making six put outs.  Taryn Malone had an RBI, and Lauren Wheeler scored a run.

The ladies will take the field on Thursday, against an unknown opponent, looking to win the District 19 title.
