General News: Town Board Cool to Police Proposal

July 08, 2008

The Cornwall town board is not ready to support the village’s exploration of a consolidation of the two municipalities’ police departments.

That was the consensus of the board members who met Monday night and discussed a request from the village board to join it in asking the state for a feasibility study.

Cornwall town supervisor Kevin Quigley told his fellow board members that he had asked village mayor Joe Gross to meet with the town first so they could discuss the idea in-depth before asking for a study.   Quigley and the rest of the members said they wouldn’t sign on to the request without a discussion first.

Deputy supervisor Mary Beth Greene-Krafft noted that the village has a lot of options, including dissolving its police department, then requesting protection from the town department.   “The village has to determine what best meets the needs of their residents, “ Greene-Krafft noted.

Town board member Al Mazzoca, who is a village resident, said the village wants to ensure that it has a patrol in the village at all times.   “I’ve never seen anything get bigger and consequently get cheaper,”  Mazzoca said, referring to the impact of a larger police department serving both the town and village.

The town board intends to write a letter to the village indicating its interest in discussing the proposal.

This is crazy! Why don't we just combine the town and village all together. Why not have one garbage pick up, one DPW, one Mayor!

I like being a Village resident and apart from the town, and I agree with Mr Mazzoca, I dont feel that the consolidation would save money, the officers and the electric still have to be paid

If I wanted to live in the town I would have purchased a home there. I live in the Village BECAUSE I like the services of the Village. I am not at all interested in consolidating anything. Thank you Mr. Mazzoca for your comment. You are exactly right in saying nothing bigger costs less.

I remember reading that the village voted for the Mayor because he wanted this study ... I havn't met or talked to anyone yet who wants this! Why are we wasting time with this study?

The Village spends a great deal of time these days looking into things and getting nothing done.
