General News: Bannerman's Island Illumination Friday & Saturday

Don’t be surprised on Friday and Saturday nights just after sunset if you see lights and hear noises coming from the castle ruins at Bannerman’s Island. It’s not ghosts, just many spirited teens and adults who are staging an illuminated production amid the ruins.

The illumination project was the brainchild of Cornwall-on-Hudson resident Deke Hazirjian, a professional lighting designer who first lit the island in 1998. This time, Hazirjian partnered with the Irvington Education Foundation and Irvington High School Tech Theater Program to produce dance, music, theater and art performances on the island that will be recorded for a documentary video.

On Thursday morning, Hazirjian could be found in the middle of the Hudson river struggling to haul two 3,500-pound generators to the island. The generators were floating on a platform while two motorboats tried to pull it upstream against the current. Back on shore, piles of containers filled with equipment waited to be hauled out and people lined up to get on the Bannerman Castle Trust pontoon boat to come out to the island.

The project is a collaboration between the Irvington School, the Castle Trust, local boat clubs and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The planners hope to raise awareness and funds to match a grant for $350,000 from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund to stabilize the Bannerman Family residence on the island.

The illumination will be visible from Cornwall-on-Hudson and Cornwall, any place with a river view. Donahue Memorial Park and Plum Point may provide some of the best vantage points. Boaters are welcomed to view the sights from the water.

Several boat tours will be going out from Newburgh, including the Pride of the Hudson. For more information, contact the Bannerman Castle Trust at (845) 234-3204.
