Members of the Class of 2016 said goodbye to their elementary schools this week in ceremonies that recognized the achievements of the young students who will enter the Cornwall middle school as fifth graders in September.

Moving-Up exercises were held Wednesday and Thursday mornings at three elementary schools in the Cornwall school district.

Members of the Cornwall Elementary School extended fourth-grade family were lucky to have beautiful blue skies for the event on Wednesday, which was held in a grassy area in front of the school.

Thursday morning was overcast with showers and the reception for the fourth-grader students and their families.  At Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School, the lovely reception, which is sponsored at each school by the parents of the third-grade class, was moved from its traditional location at the village gazebo to the lobby of the auditorium.

At each of the Moving-Up ceremonies,  parents and family members watched with pride as their children were recognized for their accomplishments in grade school in academics, athletics, music and drama.  It was a rite of passage for students and parents alike,  some of whom looked with trepidation at the idea of their youngsters moving on to the middle school next year.

Most, if not all, of the students had already visited the middle school and had a chance to see that in September they will find old friends, make new friends, and take another step down the road to graduation in 2016.
