The village Bandstand concerts get underway Tuesday evening with the music of Johnny Jake, marking the 23rd year of the series.
The concerts started in 1985, shortly after the bandstand was restored by the Bandstand Committee.
Peter Osinki joined the committee in 1997 and he has been booking all the acts ever since.
“I always have an eye out for new performers and love it when people give me suggestions on bands to consider booking,” Osinski says. “As a matter of fact, some of our best concerts over the years came from those kind of suggestions.”
Osinski says he likes to book a wide range of musicians from classical to jazz and rock, adding new performers into every summer schedule to keep things fresh.
“My main criteria for a Bandstand performer is excellent musicianship because any music is interesting and entertaining when done well, “ Osinski explains. “I feel that I have really done my job when people find themselves enjoying music that they would not otherwise have chosen to listen to.”
Once the series is rolling, Osinki has to watch the weather forecast and if rain is in the picture, he will hang a sign at the bandstand announcing the concert is cancelled.
Osinki, an insurance specialist, also plays in a band called MUNCH. They’re playing at Gail’s Place on Route 17K on Friday, June 15 and will be the featured band at the Orange County Fair on July 23.
