Orange County Press Release

County Executive Edward A. Diana and J. Brett Simmons, Commissioner of the Orange County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation presented internationally acclaimed field artist, Roger Baker with the 2008 New York State Parks and Recreation Society Arts and Humanities Award.

Roger Baker approached the County with a unique idea of using an open field as a blank canvas to create an American icon.

After gaining County approval, Baker measured and mapped-out a field here in the Thomas Bull Memorial Park, on the corner of Grove Street and Route 416. The tedious mowing slowly unveiling an 850,000 square-foot Purple Heart Medal of Honor, more than 1,000 feet long. Each detail precise, down to the seven 36-foot tall laurel leaves on each side of the three gold stars above a portrait of George Washington.

Opening ceremonies for the impressive field art was held in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of the Purple Heart Medal. The ceremonies and days that followed attracted medal recipients, private citizens, dignitaries and military brass from throughout our great country.

County Parks staff, under the direction of Baker maintained the massive field art to the publics delight for several months.

Baker’s field art has been featured on CNN and NBC’s Today Show, appearing in the New York Times and can be viewed on the Internet.
