This past Saturday, the residents of Duncan Avenue held their second annual block party.  It was a great day to socialize with old neighbors, friends, and meet new ones.

Duncan Avenue has retained its country feel, most of it without sidewalks, with several  houses set back from the road, some closer, and most surrounded by land, trees and vegetation.  A beautiful place to live but, with our busy lifestyles, it was wonderful to have a day that we could stop and actually visit with those we have only been waving hello to all year long.

The committee did an outstanding job coordinating the event and everyone appreciated all their hard work to make the day a success.  This year they organized a display table for all Duncan Avenue memorabilia, which included an old Duncan Ave. street sign, antique bottles dug from yards, and pictures from years past.

Frank Vogel, born and raised on Duncan, told the story that Duncan Ave was THE sledding spot in all of Cornwall on Hudson.  The children would start out at the very top of the road (now Joques Retreat), with a toboggan brought up by the police car.  The policeman would then station himself at the village square to stop oncoming traffic and the kids would sled all the way down, across Hudson Street, onto River Avenue and down to the river.  Mr. Vogel said it was one of his fondest memories growing up in the village.

Despite the rains that came, most families stayed on and ate all the delicious food provided by those who attended, and a group picture was smartly taken at the first quake of thunder.  It was a very happy, special day for a great neighborhood and a wonderful place to call home.

Comments:

OK, I am jealous. We have a perfect neighborhood for this sort of thing. Several of us have pools, barbecues, porch swings, etc. C'mon Lafayette, Washington, Taylor and that wierd lil' Elpis (the mayor knows the story behind that , I believe) we can do it!
