General News: Randazzo Says He Won't Run Again

Town supervisor Dick Randazzo has announced that he is not running for re-election in November, saying he had planned to step down after two terms when he first came back into office in 2003.

Randazzo served for 16 years before being defeated in 1999 by challenger Helen Bunt. He came back into the supervisor’s office when he defeated Jim Sollami, who held the position for one term after Bunt. When his current term ends, Randazzo, 61,will have served 20 years as Cornwall town supervisor.

Looking back, Randazzo says he has achieved what he set out to do when he returned to office four years ago.

“There was a big mess here when I came back in 2003,” he says. “In the first 18 months we re-did the comprehensive plan then we cleaned up the zoning. I think the town is in really good shape now.”

In 2008, he plans to run again for the assembly seat currently held by Republican Nancy Calhoun. Calhoun defeated Randazzo, a Democrat, in last November’s race by a vote of 18,601 to 16,651.

Randazzo’s withdrawal from the race means the supervisor field is wide open to Republican and Democratics candidates. Only former supervisor Jim Sollami has indicated his interest in running for the democratic nomination.

Randazzo says without the responsibilities of the office he will be able to devote more time to an assembly race and will do more professional work as a safety consultant, a practice he has worked at parttime while in office.

“It’s been a pretty emotional week since I made this official,” Randazzo says. “I love this job more now than when I walked in in 1982. Will I miss? Absolutely.”

His decision, he says, is merely an affirmation of his personal decision four years ago to leave once his goals had been accomplished.
