General News: Town Approves Summer Tent for Chamber

June 10, 2008

The Greater Cornwall Chamber of Commerce was granted permission Monday evening to put up a large tent this summer on the Town Hall Park grounds that will be used to hold events and demonstrations for the public.

Chamber president Bob DeWit says that idea was to give the business community a public gathering area so that they could raise awareness of their enterprises and encourage people to shop locally. He and Jack Trout, the owner of Cromwell Manor who thought up the tent proposal, say they expect community groups, like the Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, or Little League to hold gatherings there.

The Chamber leaders also forsee farms bringing their produce to the tents and evening concerts. Art exhibits, book signings, and fundraisers could also find a home under the tent.

The first tent event is expected to be held on Friday, June 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. when it will be a gathering point for participants in the first-ever Townies vs. Village People Art Walk competition.

In the Art Walk, people will form teams to compete to see how many businesses they can visit where local artists have hung their work. A champion Palette Cup will be awarded to the team with the most signatures from the business owners. Extra points will be awarded if all the businesses open on the Art Walk are visited. Local businesses will offer refreshments and the teams can rally at the tent before and after.

Monday’s trustee vote on the tent passed 4-to-1, with Mary Beth Kraftt Green voting “no” because of concerns about whether it is proper use of town grounds. Town attorney Stephen Gaba said the agreement is revocable if any unresolvable issues arise.

Comments:

A little more in-depth description of the "Greater Cornwall Art Walk-Off": pick up a green Art Walk map at any of the 31(!) participating businesses. Start walking! As you enter each business, there will be a clipboard with "Village People", "Townies", or "Visitors". Sign your name and check off which team you are on to receive a point. You may only be able to hit 7 or 8 of them....OR...if you get your name on ALL of the lists, your team will receive 5 extra points. John Olley of Black Belt Embroidery has generously donated a trophy on which the winning team's name will be engraved each year. Let's make this a fun and annual competition! Oh, and did I mention that all the businesses will have snacks and/or drinks available? So get out your strollers, bring your dog, turn off the TV, and start the Greater Cornwall Walk-Off! Beginning points are Storm King Adventure Tours, the new tent at Town Hall (if you want to start in the middle), or Edward Jones. Summer Soltice Night - Friday, June 22 - from 5 to 7pm. Wouldn't it be cool to see hundreds of people crossing each other on all of our sidewalks - and visiting our local businesses - and seeing great Art at the same time?!? Come on everybody.... step up to the the Challenge!!
