General News: Village Sets Fee for Summer Camp

May 26, 2008

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson board of trustees has approved a new fee schedule for its annual summer camp to be held this year at Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School.

The fee for residents of Cornwall-on-Hudson will be $75 per child up to a maximum of $250 per family.  Children in the school district who are not village residents will be changed $150 per child, up to a maximum of $250.

The camp, open to students entering grades one through six, will be in operation for six weeks from Monday, July 7 through August 15. Will Hall, who has served as camp director for the past several years, will return this summer for what is expected to be his final year.

Village trustee Barbara Gosda, who reviewed the summer camp policy with fellow trustee Rick Gioia, said that the village’s goal should be to make the camp self-supporting.  This will be the second year that the village has charged for the camp, which had traditionally been provided for free to village children.

Comments:

Just a couple of adjustments to the fee schedule as stated: Village Children $75.00 each; Out of Village per child $150.00; Village Family Max $200.00. For children in the CCSD but not village residents, there is no max limit.
Rick Gioia and I will be working with Will Hall to offer a wholesome, safe and fun program for the children this summer.

The Summer Camp's budget is a break even proposition, based on the enrollment in previous years.Charging $75/child is significantly less expensive than the town or other local summer programs. Expenses are projected based on, among other things, the hours that each employee works per week. Will Hall already spends a great deal of time with the record keeping that is above and beyond the hours he is compensated for. To go with a weekly plan, that record keeping would become a full time job in itself. This would further raise the price per child for the camp. We're trying to make this program as affordable as possible without impacting on the Village's budget. In the past, we had the luxury of being able to afford this program out of the village's general fund, but until our debt is reduced the camp must carry itself. Barbara Gosda, Will Hall and myself are actively working on adding some new activities, in addition to the great program that has gone on for years. When they are finalized, we'll share the news with everyone. We hope you'll agree that the camp will be a good value.
