General News: Hike-A-Thon Fundraiser a Success
|

Mother Nature was smiling on the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum for this year’s Hike-A-Thon fundraiser. Hike organizers, volunteers, and participants were all pleasantly surprised to wake on Saturday morning, May 17th, to clear blue skies after the prior day’s wet weather. More than 100 hikers came out to support the Museum’s 2008 Hike-A-Thon, one of the Hudson Valley’s most unique fundraising events.
“We were thrilled to see the sun shining Saturday morning,” said event co-chair Kristin Jensen. “Based on the success of last year’s Hike in the pouring rain, we knew people would turn out, but the sun and warm temperatures really made it great,” she continued. “People took the time to enjoy themselves and get to know the trails, many even tried the Museum’s new Discovery Quests while they were out there.”
Museum Board Chairman David Redden welcomed the hikers and shared a few of the Museum’s highlights from the past year, which included an award from Hudson Valley Magazine recognizing the Museum as the best way to introduce kids to nature. Before starting out, hikers had the opportunity to grab a bite to eat, explore nature exhibits, talk with educators, and then limber up with a series of stretches and warm-up exercises courtesy of Sportsplex.
Hikers chose from a variety of hike options – including the kid-friendly Nature Strollers and the Highlands Challenge, a four-hour hike to Eagle’s Point, lead by Museum Board Member George Muser, and hikes for all abilities in between.
Hike sponsors Walden Savings Bank and local law firm Jacobowitz & Gubits LLP each sent a team of hikers to show their support. Other hike sponsors who helped to make the day a success were LeCroy Corporation, as well as Time Warner Cable and RBC Capital and Hudson Valley Magazine. Also pledging their support were Cornwall Commons, Marshall & Sterling, Nugent & Haeussler PC, Sportsplex, Stanley Marks & Company LLP, and St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. The generous support provided by these Trailblazers made it possible for every dollar raised by Hike-A-Thon participants to go directly toward the support of Museum programs. Individual hikers brought in more than $16,000 in sponsorship support.
