By a solid margin, voters in the Cornwall Central School District approved a new $50.9 million budget for the next school year and authorized the district to spend $4.6 million on several building improvements, particularly updating the three elementary schools to make them compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The final tally in the budget vote was 1,175 in favor and 847 against. The capital projects were approved by a vote of 1,137 to 821.
Voters also elected three school board members, Melanie Mulroy-Robinson, Brendan Coyne and David Moretto. Robinson and Moretto will be joining the board for the first time while Coyne, who was re-elected for a third term, has been serving as its president.
Following the announcement of the election results, Cornwall schools superintendent Timothy Rehm congratulated all of the new school board members, and all those who made the effort to run. He also said he was looking forward to implementing the program they had put forward. "We're glad we can do the ADA (American with Disabilities Act) work and the capital improvements," he said.
Assistant superintendent for finance, Harvey Sotland, estimated that 2,100 people voted this year. Last year, some 3,000 voters turned out and the budget was passed by a margin of just 177 votes. This year, the budget was approved by a margin of 328 votes.
