A six-week-long art extravaganza kicks off this weekend in the greater Cornwall area with art by three dozen talented local artists on display. The Cornwall Art Walk is sponsored by the Greater Cornwall Chamber of Commerce. (Click here for a list of businesses and artists.)

The idea of bringing the work of these Cornwall area painters, photographers and multi-media artists to the public view came from a group of four members of the Greater Cornwall Chamber of Commerce who were looking for ways to stimulate business. Gail Parrinello, owner of the Cornwall Yarn Shop, credits Deke Hazirjian with the suggestion of promoting art throughout the community and she took the idea and developed it.

“I really believe that art and business is a great partnership,” Parrinello says. “We wanted to promote artists and do something that would unite our shopping districts from Cornwall Plaza, through Main Street, to the village.”

With the help of Mary Ann Neuman, a photographer who is also the head of the Culture in Cornwall Committee, Parrinello invited artists to submit their work. The response was overwhelming. The artwork will hang in the windows of various businesses and on Saturdays artists will put their work outside on the sidewalk, weather permitting.

Art Walk begins on Saturday, May 17, with an opening reception at the Sands Ring Homestead on Main Street in Cornwall. Artists will be present and samples of their artwork will be on display in a tent outside the historic building.  The work of young artists who participated in a contest for students in grades K through 4 will also be on exhibit.  Tours of the homestead will be available to the public and light refreshments will be served.

The public is invited to stop by and pick up a self-guided map of the Art Walk, or simply stroll down the streets, looking for balloons that will be outside each business that is participating. The maps are also available at the participating businesses and a list of participants is available by clicking here.

Parrinello notes that the Art Walk is designed to bring people to the shopping district while also giving them a chance to get exercise by walking the full Art Walk route from Quaker Avenue to the end of Hudson Street in the village. Pedometers will be handed out at the reception for any walker interested in tracking just how many steps it takes to enjoy this fantastic display of artistic talent.
