In the second year since its inception, the Cornwall Middle School Jazz Combo is going strong.  Under the direction of Middle School Band Director, Steve Kessler, this small musical group has had some unique performing opportunities.  Last year, in addition to their school concerts, the combo performed at the COH Bandstand as well as for the community as they entered the middle school for the annual budget vote.  They also provided music “on the porch” for the Newburgh Historical Society.

Over the next few weeks, you can see the CCMS Jazz Combo as they once again perform for the budget vote at the middle school from 6:00 – 7:00PM in the lobby on May 20.  They will also be performing at the Cornwall Public Library on June 6 from 4:00 – 5:00PM.  After they get finished, they will pack up their instruments and perform over at the New Windsor Country Inn for the residents there from 6:30 – 7:30 PM.

On Monday, June 9 you can hear their jazz music at Barnes & Noble from 6:00 – 6:30PM.  And then on June 10 you can see both the CCMS Jazz Band and the Jazz Combo perform for the community at the COH Bandstand from 7:00 – 8:30PM.

The members of the group are: Eric Stein, Kevin Venkatesh and Emerson Benn on the saxophones; Matt Suckling on trumpet, Ryan Gagnon on trombone, Max Finkelstein on drums and the lovely Sage Kirwan on vocals.

The members of this group have demonstrated a true love and appreciation of music, especially jazz.  The group is very informal. There is no conductor.  The students call the tunes and decide the order of the improvised solos, etc.

“The great thing about a group like this is that it is ever-changing.  We could play the same song 10 times and each time we will approach it differently,”  Kessler said.  “It is very exciting to watch this unfold.”

As students move on to the high school, Kessler will be recruiting new students for this coveted group. Of the six present members, four will be graduating, allowing some new faces to join the group next year. The two remaining members, trumpeter Suckling and tenor saxophonist Benn will be the veterans of the group and will help acclimate the new members to how the group runs.
