St. Thomas students celebrate May Crowning |

This past Monday, St. Thomas of Canterbury School celebrated the annual May Crowning. Since medieval times, the month of May has been linked to devotions of Mary in the Roman Catholic Church. All over the world special observances are planned in communities and in homes to honor the Mother of Jesus. In the center of Cornwall this tradition was brought to life on the grounds of St. Thomas School as the students, faculty and families came together to show their devotion.
Every member of the third grade class had a part in the service which began indoors. Prayers were offered and intercessions asked, with the final and most heartfelt prayer for the safety of our armed forces. The second grade class all dressed in their communion finery was introduced to sign the Hail Mary while the rest of the school and their families sang along.
The praying of the Rosary began, led by Principal Agnes Maleakas and the kindergarten class, as the group exited the building into the glorious spring day and processed around the grounds culminating at the statue of Mary. Second grader Elizabeth Conley crowned the statue with a wreath while all in attendance sang. Mrs. Maleakas completed the afternoon with a prayer of thanks to Mary for her many blessings including the truly spectacular weather, and with an urging to everyone present to remember to honor Mary for her many intercessions on our behalf, not only in the month of May, but all year long.
