General News: Public Speaks on Closing Rte. 218 Ext.

Several people appealed to the village board of trustees on Monday to carefully study the downside of  closing off the Route 218 extension that leads to Dock Hill Road.  The chief concern expressed was that the proposed changes may not increase the safety of the intersection.

Village mayor Joe Gross is in favor of closing off the road and turning the area in a small park that would connect with the village-owned Pagenstecher park.  Last week, several spruce trees were planted in the area near the reconstructed stone bridge under Route 218.

On Monday, Central Hudson was moving a telephone pole at the intersection of Dock Hill Road and Route 218 in order to make the right-hand turn onto Dock Hill Road easier.

Last spring, a new hiking trail from the riverfront to Storm King Mountain was inaugurated, passing through the Route 218 extension. The area also borders Pagenstecher Park, which has fallen into disrepair. Earlier this month, Mayor Gross applied for a grant to rehabilitate the Pagenstecher Park area.

Comments:

Following the public comments, the Board voted tonight to table the resolution to close the old "Dock Hill Extension" until the State has completed its analysis of the intersection and made recommendations.
