General News: Arson Destroys House, Shatters Family

Only the garage escaped the fire |
April 30, 2007
Lisa Nasuti had been looking forward to this week for a long time. She was planning to close on the sale of her home on Friday, May 4, ending a long, protacted divorce settlement that left her the house.
On Friday, April 27, Lisa said she met her ex-husband one last time at their former home by the high school to ask him to remove his remaining belongings from the home. She and her two children, ages 6 and 9, had already moved into a rental in Cornwall.
Lisa says she was looking forward to a new beginning that would be made possible with the money from the house sale, paying off debts and perhaps going back to school.
The couple argued at that meeting, she says, and her husband grabbed her arm. She broke free and ran, calling a friend to ask him to intervene with her ex-husband.
Less than a half-an-hour later the friend called back. He had gone to her house on Shadowood Lane to find the house in flames and her ex-husband nowhere to be found.
On Sunday, Lisa walked through the ruins of her home that had been completely destroyed in the fire despite the efforts of fire companies throughout the area who had to bring water up from a hydrant on Route 94. When the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the family cat that had been unable to escape the blaze.
Lisa was sure that her ex-husband had caused the fire and she worried that her insurance would deny her claim if it indeed turned out to be arson. Everything that she had planned on to bring some security to the shattered family was apparently gone.
The police could not find her ex-husband, Gregory Rocco, throughout the weekend and extra police patrols were put on to protect the family in Cornwall.
Finally, late Sunday night, New Windsor police found the man in their jurisdiction and handed him over to New York State Police, which headed up the investigation into the fire.
Monday morning, state police brought the 52-year-old Rocco in to Cornwall town court, where he was charged with 3rd degree arson, a felony. He entered a not guilty plea.
“The fire hurt a lot of people,” said Cornwall realtor Ellen Kelly of Smitchger Realty. Her firm has spent two years marketing the home and finally found buyers, another family with children, who thought that they would be moving into the place shortly. “There is nobody to be happy for, everyone lost,” she said.
Looking at the charred ruins of her former home, Lisa cannot believe the misfortune that has befallen her and her children. Yet she remains philosophical about it and hopes that someday, when they have recovered from the tragedy, it will all make sense.
Relatives of Lisa Nasuti say that they are setting up channels for people who want to make a donation to the family. Once established, it will be announced in this space.
