Two new Cornwall-on-Hudson trustees were sworn into office on Monday evening.  Barbara Gosda and Rick Gioia were elected on March 18, 2008, to a two-year term in office.  It is the first time in public office for the pair.  They join sitting trustees Mark Edsall and William Fogarty on the board, along with Mayor Joe Gross.  Edsall was appointed as deputy mayor.

Following the swearing-in, Mayor Joe Gross announced other changes in village boards and committees.   He appointed Andrew Argenio to the planning board and recognized that John Farr was stepping down from the same group.

Mayor Gross had expected to replace long-term planning board chairwoman Mary Aspin with Farr until Farr informed him that he couldn’t meet the obligation.   Gross said Aspin had offered to step down and he noted that she had been on the board for a long time.  “I wasn’t unhappy with her,” Gross said, “but I thought it was time for a change.”

The mayor did follow through on his plan to replace the current village attorney, Howard Protter.  Protter’s firm, Jacobowitz & Gubits, was not reappointed and the trustees planned to discuss the issue of legal council in a closed-door executive session after the public meeting.

The mayor also appointed Simon Gruber as the new chair of the Riverfront Revitalization Committee, replacing outgoing chair John Wenz, who remains a member.  Gruber is a consultant with the Orange County Water Authority and an activist on many water-related issues.

In her first act as trustee, Gosda introduced a motion to hold an optional public work session on Saturday, a move that the mayor had sought in order to accommodate residents who are busy during the week.  It was approved unanimously.

At the end of the meeting, Chris Donato, an employee of the department of public works, spoke as the representative of members of the Civil Service Employees Administration (CSEA) and congratulated the new trustees on their election.  He also thanked outgoing trustees Peter Miller and Rudy Hahn for their service to the community.

Comments:

The loss of Mary Aspin, John Farr and the law firm of Jacobowitz & Gubits will be staggering for the Village.
