Fairytale characters take the stage in the Cornwall middle school production of “Into the Woods,” which runs from Thursday, April 3 through Saturday, April 5.

If you are familiar with the Grimm Brothers fairytales featuring Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack (and the Beanstalk), then you will want to catch this production that tells the stories with a twist.

The characters you’ve known since childhood are joined in this story by new ones, the baker and his wife, whose actions raise moral questions in the second half of the play. There is a witch, of course, a wolf, and even the Beanstalk giant’s widow whose arrival sets in motion a plot of revenge.

The heart of the play, however, is the music, written by Stephen Sondheim, perhaps the greatest living composer of American theater music. The theme song “Into the Woods,” brings in a cast of dozens of young players -- woodland sprites, flowers, doves, townspeople and even a traveling tapping “lunch bunch” – whose powerful singing and dancing will stay with you long after the performance.

The colorful costumes of the characters from Cinderella and the delicate flower girls to the leaf-covered Mysterious Man enliven the stage.

Spanish teacher Marietta Moulton directs the production for the second year a row. Valerie Ransbottom, a music and choral teacher, provides the musical direction, a role she has played for many years at the school. The costumes were created by a group of talented parents, headed up by Karen Eremin.

Tickets to the show are still available for those who want to catch a performance of “Into the Woods.”
