General News: Voter Turnout on Tuesday
|
Gary Polanski stood outside village hall and encouraged people to vote. |
March 18, 2008
Five hundred and six people voted in the election for two village trustees this year. In the previous election with only trustee seats up to vote, in 2006, when Rudy Hahn and Peter Miller ran unopposed, only 55 people voted.
The single polling place, at Village Hall, was open from 12 noon until 9 p.m. and within four hours, more than 225 people had voted. By the night's end, that number had doubled.
Perhaps contributing to the solid voter turnout was Gary Polanski, a village resident who stood outside the polling place from noon until dark, with a sign encouraging people to vote.
Why did Polanski feel compelled to remind people to vote today? "I think we need to look closely at our leadership and we need a change," he said.
People generally welcomed Polanski's presence, he said. "People have said 'thanks for reminding me,'" Polanski recalled, noting that "a full turn out is a healthy turnout."
Comments:
Gary Polanski is a wonderful example of how one citizen can contribute in a big way. It is heartening that people are feeling that they can make a difference and that their voices will be heard. After so many years of "We know best and we'll do what we want" -- there is now opportunity for fairness and transparency. Thank you Mr. Polanski!
