Cornwall-on-Hudson voters elected Barbara Gosda and Rick Gioia to two-year terms as trustees.

The total voter turnout was 506 with a breakdown of votes as follows:

Rick Gioia 261 votes

Barbara Gosda 386 votes

Charles (Rudy) Hahn 188 votes

Peter Miller 228 votes

Miller and Hahn were incumbents seeking a new term. Barbara Gosda was a first-time officer seeker while Gioia was in his second consecutive bid for the office. Both Gosda and Gioia campaigned on a platform of support for mayor Joseph Gross, who was voted into office in 2007.

"Barbara and Rick represent a different mind set," Gross said after the vote, "while Rudy and Pete were mired in the mindset that had been going on for many years. Barbara and Rick are open to new ideas. I'm happy for the two of them. Now the real work begins."

Gosda, who sat through the vote count with her husband, Bob, said that now she is ready to work for the community. Rick Gioia and Peter Smith were not present and Rudy Hahn, who has served as trustee for nearly 30 years, congratulated Mrs. Gosda before leaving the room.

Congratulations Rick and Barbara. The turnout and the margin of victory shows that the village is looking to move ahead. This is a great win for the Village and a show of support for our mayor.

I really hope MORE village residents attend meeting and stay on top of this new board. If we do not participate then we deserve what we get.

I think village residents already patricipated by showing up to vote!! A strong turn-out usually doesn't bode well for incumbents, it means the voter wants to see a change. Good luck to the new board.

I wonder how many registered voters there are in the Village?

Rick ran as the "green" canidate. I hope now he can convince the board to over turn the decision to pick up recyclable material less often. More people are going to be throwing out things they could have recycled. Help us Rick. This will only lead to increased garbage costs.

Surfmom raises a valid point regarding lowered compliance as a result of the bi-weekly pick up schedule.I can tell you I was at the work session when the details of the plan were discussed and I was the only one to raise the issue of the unintended consequence of lower compliance. In defense of the plan, though, we have to realize that this is a balancing act. Fuel costs are now painfully real, as is the state of our aging fleet of DPW trucks, and most importantly our multi-million dollar debt. On balance, it may be that villagers will, by necessity, have to condition themselves to follow the schedule which the town has shown to work successfully. For years, we used the plastic buckets which the village provided for recycling. At some point they started breaking apart, so we purchased half-sized garbage containers, which were larger than the village buckets but smaller than standard garbage containers. Speaking for my family of four, we can handle two weeks between pick-ups, although weekly pick-ups have certainly been convenient. Dave Halvorsen explained that many of the containers emptied under the current schedule are only slightly filled. In terms of overall energy savings, this is a more environmentally friendly plan, AS LONG AS villagers are able to shift gears with this schedule. Hopefully, we'll hear from more people on this and make adjustments if possible. Thanks for speaking up.
