Crazy for You is the title of the latest production of the PTO Kids Klub at Cornwall-on-Hudson elementary school and for the show’s director, Pamela Hawks, it was crazy all around at Tuesday’s dress rehearsal.
“I have 12 kids out with various ailments, including three leads,” Hawk said, “and my leading lady has a cast on her leg.” She looked around the busy auditorium where red-sequined girls sat in rows and the parents milled about and continued, “People tell me it’s normal, but it is a dance show.”
Crazy for You, a Gershwin musical, tells the story of wanna-be showman Bobby Child who heads west where the cowgirls are and rescues a family farm on the brink of foreclosure. There is a passionate love tale woven through – and lots of dancing from the show girls, the dancehall guys and gals, and even four little cupids who hurry along romance.
With tunes like “I Got Rhythm,” “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” and “Bidin’ My Time,” the production is sure to get the audience’s toes tapping. Musical director Steve Kessler leads a tight group of seven musicians in the orchestra pit and provides the music that moves the show along swiftly – and enjoyably.
Those is the audience will notice that, for the first time, professional sound helps to amplify the voices of the sometimes shy young actors. Frank Ostrander brought his mikes, amplifiers and audio board for the performances and interjected sound effects throughout.
Director Hawks worked closely on the production with Kristine Williams, the producer, who has been key to the Kids Klub production for years. Sharon Zanin was in the front row, prompting the performers who forgot their lines. After nine years, Zanin gets misty-eyed when she talks about “my last show,” but her son, John Michael, is the lead this year and having the time of his life.
