The wells are under this water on Taylor Road |
April 16, 2007
The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Water Department is advising consumers of the department's water to boil water for two minutes before consuming it or to use bottled water.
Village clerk Jeane Mahoney explained that a shutdown of the Catskill aqueduct filter plant forced the department to rely exclusively on water from its well field on Taylor Road, an area that has been flooded by the recent rains.
"We can't be sure that outside materials didn't get in to the water," Mahoney said, adding, "There is chlorine in the water, however, and we believe it is safe." Mahoney noted that the advisory to boil water is a pre-cautionary step until the water can be tested.
The water department is working to get the Catskill aqueduct filter plant back on line. High turbidity in the aqueduct supply can lead to a shutdown like the one today, she said.
Advisories have been sent out to senior centers, the schools (even though they area closed today) and the hospital. Below is the full notice from the village.
PRECAUTIONARY BOIL WATER NOTICE NOTICE TO CONSUMERS OF THE VILLAGE OF CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON AND TOWN OF CORNWALL WATER SYSTEM CWS ID# 3503526
Due to the recent heavy rainfalls and flooding in the area of the Village’s well field, the Orange County Health Department and the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson recommend that all water used from this supply be rapidly boiled for at least two (2) minutes prior to use for either drinking or food preparation purposes.
Another alternative is to use bottled water, certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health. You should continue this practice until such time that it is demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Health Department that the repairs have been completed and analyses have been performed to verify that the water is safe to drink.
If you have any questions relative to the utilization of water from supply please do not hesitant to contact the water supplier at (845) 534-4200 or the Orange County Department of Health (telephone: 845-291-2331).
