New York State Senator Bill Larkin says that he is not going to cast judgment on New York Governor Eliot Spitzer who today was linked to a prostitution ring.

Larkin said in a phone interview from Albany that he has not seen the evidence against Spitzer, who apologized this afternoon to his family and to the public for violating his sense of right and wrong. Spitzer did not comment on the reported allegation that he hired a prostitute last month from a prostitution ring under federal investigation. The New York Times broke the story today.

“I feel remorse for the family,” Larkin said. “It’s a tragedy for the wife and children to go through this.”

In his brief statement, Spitzer did not address whether he would resign from office, which some in Albany are already demanding. If he does step down, Lt. Governor David Patterson would assume the top state job.

Senator Larkin says that he has known Patterson from when he was a state senator and majority leader. “I find David Patterson to be a very reasonable person,” Larkin said.
