Public works crews from the town and village are busy preparing the grounds around the Little League fields for Saturday’s opening day parade and ceremony.

On Wednesday, the village department of public works lent its paving machine to the job of black topping around the new Little League building. The town of Cornwall highway department hauled in the asphal and loads of soil that were spread along the edges of the roadway.

Earlier in the week, the new building received a coat of red paint, bringing it in line with the other structures in the park. The building, which will serve as a concession stand and headquarters of the Cornwall Little League, replaces one that burned down in February 2006. That fire was ruled an arson and two individuals are facing criminal charges for their alleged roles in the fire.

John Wood, the supervisor of the Cornwall building and grounds department, oversaw the construction project. At Monday’s town board meeting, the board voted to give Wood a second $1500 stipend for his work. Supervisor Dick Randazzo called it “a bargain for the work that John has put into coordinating the project.” Randazzo said that Wood did a tremendous job and said the building will be a real asset to the Little League and to the community.

Supervisor Randazzo says that the money paid by insurance for the destroyed shed easily covered the cost of the new, larger structure.  That was made possible, he notes,  by the donated materials and volunteer labor from many people.
