General News: Library Budget Vote and Trustee Election

March 25, 2016

Cornwall Public Library 2016/2017 Annual Operating Budget Vote and Trustee Election

Cornwall, NY – On Tuesday, April 12, voters residing in the Cornwall Central School District will have the opportunity to vote on the library's 2016/2017 annual operating budget. Staying within the tax cap, this budget supports the programs and services that the library provides to the community all year long. There will be a public hearing on Wednesday, March 30, at 7:00pm, in the library community room to discuss the budget vote and trustee election.

The library is making a significant impact in Cornwall. Attendance increased by 7.78% bringing over 159,000 visits to our building just this past year. Programming attendance by kids and adults continues to soar with the 639 programs offered in 2015, providing opportunities for 9,700 attendees to learn, grow and be inspired. Use, and demand for, free digital resources continues to increase as the library expands its downloadable eBook, audio and DVD collections; and we welcomed increased access and use of our WiFi, along with new mobile print services that are accessible from any device in the library, home or car. Book clubs and collections continue to thrive offering best sellers for pick up or download. A homebound delivery service provides access to library materials even if someone cannot make it to the library due to illness or mobility issues.

“As we embark on our long range planning process this year, I look forward to building on these successes, surveying our community, and customizing our future programming, collections and services to best meet the needs and desires of the Cornwall community,” said the Library’s new director, Mary Lou Carolan.

Also on April 12, the public will be asked to consider the election of Bruce Cohen as trustee to fill a five year term. An avid library user, Mr. Cohen brings a lifetime of teaching experience from NYC public schools and Monroe Woodbury High School, along with a commitment of volunteerism in Cornwall and Orange County. An active artist, he has shown his work at venues around the area including Hudson Street Café, Newburgh City Hall and the Newburgh Public Library. Mr. Cohen seeks to strengthen the role of the library and its outreach efforts in the Cornwall community in his role as trustee.
