Saving planet earth is the goal of 108 elementary school students when they take to the stage this weekend in the Cornwall Elementary School drama club production “Rock the World.”
The production is a musical revue, with songs like “Hot Down Here,” and “Driving Miss Lazy” that illustrate the problem of global warming.
The plot of the revue revolves around efforts to rehabilitate rundown housing and shows how young people can make a difference in the environment. In one scene, a boy drives onto the stage in a car that is powered by bio-fuel made from used cooking oil from restaurants. Around him, dancers carry batons that are really giant French fries and sing “French Fry Day.”
The producers and directors of the show, which is being staged at Cornwall Central High School, took themes and songs from two shows – “Update Earth” and “Assignment Earth” by John Jacobson and Roger Emerson – to create “Rock Our World.”
The Drama Club at the Lee Road school has a tradition of picking shows that have an educational perspective. In this case, the lesson is that students must learn to take care of their environment.
The parent-driven production is remarkably sophisticated and organized. Maura Franke and Rhonda Growney serve as overall producers, while Ann Shatto directs, with Christina Wallace and Karen Snider as choreographer and musical director. Karen Snider writes in her note in the program that this is the eighth production she has worked on.
It was the close-knit community in the Drama Club that decided to postpone the play from last week to this, following the death of the father of one of the young actors (Story here.) They are presenting this play as a benefit for the family and will accept donations throughout the three performances, which start with an open rehearsal on Thursday at 7 pm. (Full show details here.)
We caught up with the Lee Road elementary students at a recent rehearsal and, in the photos at right, bring you a hint of what you can expect when the curtain rises.
