Cornwall town supervisor Kevin Quigley has requested $1.07 million from the federal government to upgrade the town’s sewer plant on Shore Road.
Quigley said he made the request during a private meeting with U.S. Representative John Hall (D-NY) last week.
Quigley said the money would be used to upgrade the sewer plant, which he said is operating normally but could face problems in the future. In 2005 and 2006, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation cited concerns about how the plant handles overflow during periods of peak storm water runoff. While the immediate issues have been addressed, concerns linger about the long-term viability of the facility.
“It’s an old building built in the 1960s,” Quigley noted, “it could be an environmental nightmare if something happened.” He said that the federal money would be used for preventative maintenance.
Asked if he thought that Hall, a freshman congressman, could secure the funds, Quigley said he thinks it is do-able but “nothing is guaranteed.”
Quigley said he also intends to ask for federal aid to help revitalize downtown Cornwall to give it “curb appeal.”
Comments:
long term viability is the real question, especially with so many new developments in the works. Can this facility adequately handle the flow of waste at this time?
