General News: Riverfront Park Use Debated

Parking at Donahue Park can be a problem
Parking at Donahue Park can be a problem
February 19, 2008

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson wants to impose fees for groups to use the riverfront gazebo at Donahue Memorial Park.  And, at the same time, Mayor Joseph Gross said he is philosophically opposed to requiring village residents to purchase permits to use the park.

At the village trustee meeting on Tuesday evening, Gross passed around a schedule of proposed fees that range from $50 to $350 depending on the number of vehicles involved and whether the group is made up of residents or a not-for-profit organization.  It also suggests that a parking attendant be hired to sell day-use permits for $5.

The proposal was sent to the Riverfront Revitalization Committee for its review.

During the discussion of the proposed fees, two of the candidates for trustee seats in the March election expressed their opposition to residents paying to use “their park.”   Rick Gioia raised his concerns first and fellow candidate Barbara Gosda agreed with him.   Gross ended the discussion by saying he hoped that “we can eliminate that.”

The park permits that both residents and non-residents must buy for access to parking and the riverfront boat launch at the riverfront generate nearly $17,000 in revenue annually, according to village clerk Jeanne Mahoney.

Mahoney also noted that raising money is not the reason why the village is creating a group use fee. “People love our area, as we do,”  Mahoney said, “we don’t want to exclude anybody, but if a local girl wants to go down there to get her picture taken when she gets married, we should make it available.”

Save the Village's money hiring a parking attendant. Put a Police Officer or Park Ranger to regulate and collect use fees at the park. This would enhance safety and save our precious park for our residents.
