It is very exciting to share two talented artists who have shown great interest and dedication to their artwork since they entered middle school.

Emily Broker is a 6th grader who has always put her best efforts into her artwork. She has a great imagination and the motivation to continue to develop her skills. Her focus is evident in the artwork she has presented in the studio.

One of her earliest memories is creating art with her mom at a Mommy and Me class. She remembers making handprints with a poem on the side… a classic. Having kept this piece, I am sure it brings back many good memories!

In class, students work with a variety of materials to express themselves, but Emily enjoys working most with pastels. “I like to work in pastels because I love how the color comes out,” she says.

Her favorite artist is Georges Seurat. His unique technique of creating images through dots became known as Pointillism and it creates an interesting texture within the work. Emily enjoyed recreating a landscape painting inspired by the style of Seraut in art class this year. “I really enjoyed learning how to paint in another way” she says about her current favorite technique.

Emily also participates in the CCMS Jazz Band where she plays the saxophone under the direction of Mr. Kessler, attends private music class and dance class and has fun participating on stage with Drama Club.

When asked how she thinks the arts impact the world, Emily says, “Art shows how people see the world and how they show their feelings about it.”

Another artistically talented 6th grader is Nicole Milano. Nicole has demonstrated a visual eye for realism and is growing as an artist. Her drawings are well rendered with lots of details, imagination and controlled line. One of Nicole’s earliest memories of creating art is when she used to draw pictures of her friends doing different things. Her favorite art materials to work in are colored pencils and paint. One only has to look at her drawings to see how well she controls the material.

Nicole’s favorite artist is Vermeer because, she says, “he adds so many little details into his paintings. He also creates light in a really cool way”. In art class, we studied Italian artist Alberto Giacometti, best know for his elongated figure sculptures. Our Giacometti- inspired tin foil sculpture is one of her favorite art pieces. Could it be because she was exploring a medium different from that of pencil and paint?

Nicole also dances, plays the piano and participates in the Drama Club.

When asked how she thinks the arts impact the world, Nicole says, “It is something that shows a person’s feelings or thoughts and a lot of people often don’t really know how to express themselves. If someone is mad, then instead of taking it out on other people they could create something using their feelings.”

Our school community is proud of our young, talented, high spirited students who recognize themselves as artists. Sharing our ideas and thoughts through the arts reminds everyone how important it is to stay connected to our imagination and creativity.
